Yangon Engineering Workshop
Workshop was originally built for repair and maintenance of signalling and
telecommunication equipments as wll as track inspection vehicles, all types of permanent
way and civil engineering construction machineries and motor vehicles. Later track
materials such as points and crossing and dogspikes are manufactured here.
Bridge Girder Depot
It is located in Yangon This workshop is principally engaged in the construction of
steel bridge girders and pre-stressed concrete bridge components such as girders and deck
slabs. Another major activity of this shop is the manufacture of P.C. sleepers. There is
also a gas pressure rail welding facility which is used to weld rail purchased in 39 ft.
length into 117 ft. lengths prior to track installation.
Training Facilities & Institutions
Formal training for railways staff is carried out at two institutions, that is the
Railway Technical Training Center at Ywataung and the Central Institute of Transport and
Communications at Meiktila.
(a) The Railways Technical Training Center
The RTTC had been established since 1981 with the aid from Federal Republic of Germany.
This is basically a Mechanical & Electrical training school of which aims and
objectives are solely for upgrading the technical skills of the fitters and supervisors
engaged in the Diesel locomotives works.

The central Institute of Transport and Communications
This is a training center for all agencies (Directorates and Enterprises) under the
Ministry of Rail Transportation. For the railway field there are 21 courses ranking from
station master course to locomotive driving course.
Development Plans
For the economic growth of Myanmar, Myanma Railways being one of sub-systems of
transportation is bond to implement the development plan for improvement of efficiency,
reliability and quality of rail transport service such as safety, punctuality, accuracy,
rapidity and comfortability. In accordance woth Government's short term five year plan for
all round economic development. MR. has its own five year plan in various branches by
implementing the development projects.
